Japan was a novelty. During my photo trip in 2018, I stopped off in Tokyo, Fujisawa, Kamakura, Enoshima, Kyoto, Inuyama, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima and Miyajima. A mix of snapshots and scenes from everyday life, the photographs offer a candid and unbiased view of the country from a highly personal perspective, off the tourist trail and all-too-familiar nature- and cityscapes. They depict the country as it is today, from everyday life to Sunday best, with a thematic focus on women and family, habits and customs, religion and tradition. The photographs are accompanied by an essay in which I describe impressions collected on this journey.
