For many years, artists´ associations have not only demanded fair fees for exhibitions, but also a legal regulations for enforcement. For visual artists, there are still no scale of fees, only guidelines, developed for example by the Federal Association of Visual Artists or by ver.di. But very few can even live from the sale of their works. A prescribed fee would be a remedy, because a discussion would be unnecessary. An conversation about fees for exhibitions and collaboration, guidelines, legal loopholes and problems with enforcement, also in Leipzig.

Art is not only a vocation, it is a profession which makes, in addition to creativity and skill, versatile demands on artists. As Freelance they work on uncertain ground and particularly family commitments make the work of female artists often difficult. Thus the unequal chances that are still present today are becoming strengthen more and more on the art market.
The artist property in Prösitz has recognized this problem and offers therefore free spaces to female artists with children since 25 years. Scholarship holders from Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Spain and other countries are creating works of art in Prösitz, which find the way into public exhibitions.

The book “A quarter century“ (Sax-Verlag 2017) provides an insight into the visual arts in the area of sculpture and installation and illuminates the artistic existence between motherhood, idealism and breadwinning.

“Art in Conversation“ III/2016
Michaela Weber in conversation with the art historian Ilka Wonschik about the artist Chava Pressburger.

3rd of November 2016 at 6 p.m. in Café Wagner, Richard-Wagner-Platz 1, Leipzig. Entrance is free.

Dr Ilka Wonschik got to know Chava Pressburger during her research on her book “Es war wohl ein anderer Stern, auf dem wir lebten… – Künstlerinnen in Theresienstadt“. Deeply moved by her art, she decided to present life and work of Pressburger in a monograph, published recently.
The motivation to write this book and the conversations with the artist in her studio in Israel are the themes of “art in conversation“. Pressburger (born 1930) survived the Shoah and after her emigration to Israel in 1948, she continued to deal with violence and war. This experience strongly influenced her art, and today–in times of terror–Pressburger´s paintings and paperwork are a painful bridge between past and present.
